Who are we?

Speaking of Dogs is a Toronto-based organization which launched in 2001, and is dedicated to educating and enlightening people about dogs through seminars, workshop forums, outreach and rescue. Our goal is to end cruelty, abandonment, mistreatment and homelessness of man's best friend. The founders of Speaking of Dogs have 50 years of combined experience and knowledge. They have worked in animal shelters, veterinary clinics, rescue organizations and dog training facilities and are devoted to the welfare of dogs.

Our Seminars

Speaking of Dogs is celebrating its 10^th year hosting timely and topical seminars designed to enhance the relationship and effectiveness of organizations and individuals who care for and about dogs. We’ve offered dynamic seminars on topics such as how to assess and prepare shelter and rescue dogs for adoption, understanding nutritional health, animal communication, dog/child safety, how dogs communicate with each other and positive training techniques with positive results. We take great pride in the well respected speakers we choose; most of our presenters are classed as experts in their chosen field. These invaluable one and two day workshops have been attended by thousands of participants including humane society staff and volunteers, animal care and control workers, rescue organizations, therapy dog groups, dog trainers and behaviourists, groomers, doggy daycare staff, veterinarians and their clinic employees. Province of Ontario Rescue Directory

Speaking of Dogs publishes the ‘Breed Specific and All Breed Rescue Directory’ annually which has helped thousands of shelter dogs receive the second chance they so justly deserve. The directory provides vital rescue contact information for both single breed dogs and mixes. Also included in the directory is a complete shelter list of Ontario shelters (both animal control and SPCA branches and affiliates) which are listed alphabetically. It has become a well used resource and is distributed province-wide free of charge. The directory is supported by advertisers that believe in the cause.

The Rescue Arm

Since 2001 Speaking of Dogs Rescue has helped transport, foster, re-home and vet hundreds of dogs. All dogs entering our rescue arm are spayed or neutered, microchipped and have their medical needs attended to. The majority of dogs we admit into the rescue are from shelters or are puppy mill survivors; we also have a focus on senior dogs. Our dogs are lovingly cared for in foster homes until a suitable forever placement is found. Our adoption process entails a written application, a telephone interview, reference and veterinary checks and an in home visit. We are dedicated to placing our dogs in homes that are responsible, caring and compassionate. We are committed to a dogs’ quality of life and adopt only to suitably matched applicants.

Foster Homes

Sadly, each new day brings a flood of emails and telephone pleas to help yet another abandoned dear dog. We try and help these displaced dogs through our rescue efforts and networking. We are always in search of new foster homes where a dog can be cared for and loved until a permanent home is found. Speaking of Dogs Rescue covers food, medical attention and all the supplies required for the dogs in foster care. Foster parents need be responsible and patient people who will provide a safe environment for our dogs. A foster contract must be signed. This is a serious responsibility; however the experience is very rewarding. If you can open your heart and home to a foster dog please contact us. We have a comprehensive Foster Manual available for people who are considering becoming a foster parent.
